DON'T DOUBT THE DROUGHT

As you know, in January, Governor Brown, declared a drought state of emergency and directed state officials to take all necessary actions in preparation for a water shortage.  As of June 1st, the Governor mandated a 25 percent emergency water use reduction until February 2016.  With continuous efforts, Californians surpassed June’s conservation rate by 27.3 percent and even better July’s water use was reduced by 31.3 percent! That’s great news! For the last two consecutive months, everyone’s efforts and all campaigning, we, as a state, exceeded the Governor’s 25 percent emergency conservation mandate!

EMERGENCY STATEWIDE DROUGHT

Last month, Governor Jerry Brown declared a Statewide Emergency Drought and asked that all Californians reduce their water usage by twenty percent. The precipitation and snowpack measurement levels are at the lowest in California's recorded history, which dates back at least one hundred years! November through March averages seventy-five percent of our annual precipitation of which fifty percent of our annual precipitation occurs from the months of December through February. As you know we are near the end of February and have seen very little rain. www.drought.gov/drought/content/resources/drought-related-research.

WATER CONSERVATION STARTS AT HOME

With temperatures rising across the Southland for the summer heat so is the water usage in and outside our homes. Although the water supply may appear endless, California is no stranger to droughts. Thus, when living in California any drought can literally be around the corner! According to the Department of Water Resources, 2013 began with the driest record from November through May since 1920. As the population continues to grow and the precipitation is scarce, it is important that we, as a community, work together to conserve the water that we have stored. All California residents, in all communities, should NOT take the water we have for granted. How can we as a community work together in conserving our water supply? Well, it is very easy and it starts at home!
